Wolfgang Guggenberger – Trumpet (Germany)

Wolfgang Guggenberger, born in Sonthofen in southern Germany, won first prize at the national competition »Jugend musiziert«, and was awarded the »European Prize« at the National Youth Competition. In 1978, he made a name for himself as a prize winner and scholarship recipient at the renowned »Deutscher Musikwettbewerb« (German Music Competition). Numerous scholarships and cultural grants frame Wolfgang Guggenberger’s career. He completed his studies at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich under the tutelage of Rolf Quinque before graduating with distinction from the University of Music in Trossingen under Prof. Horst-Dieter Bolz. He then undertook an intensive two-year course at Northwestern University in Chicago, studying with Vincent Cichowicz, Adolph Herseth and Arnold Jacobs — an experience that proved both formative and artistically inspiring. As a member of the German Music Council’s list of artists, Wolfgang Guggenberger has performed as a soloist with a number of renowned German orchestras. He gained experience as an orchestral trumpet player during his engagement with the Württemberg Philharmonic Orchestra (principal trumpet) and through further guest engagements with the HR Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Bach Collegium Stuttgart. As a sought-after teacher and lecturer, he has given master classes in Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, Georgia, Southeast Asia, the USA and Mexico. In addition to various radio recordings, Wolfgang Guggenberger has released three CDs of solo and chamber music. Published in 2004, his method book »BASICS PLUS« (Rundel Music Publications) quickly became a staple in brass pedagogy. In 2026, he published »BASICS PLUS 4.0« (Martin Schmid Music Publishing), a study guide featuring four-part exercises, play-alongs, and texts and videos on various topics related to playing technique and mental aspects. Wolfgang Guggenberger held the position of lecturer for trumpet and Head of Brass and Percussion at the Richard-Strauss-Conservatory, Munich from 1986 until 2005, when he accepted a professorship at the Trossingen State University of Music. Until his retirement in 2023, he was also director of the »Positively Brass & Percussion« institute, responsible for the international »Positively Brass & Percussion Symposium« held regularly since 2015. He also directed the »Trumpet Ensemble of the Trossingen University of Music«, which recorded a series of commissioned works for the CD »Kaleidollage« (Rundel compact). From 2018 to 2022, Wolfgang Guggenberger was engaged as a visiting professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.
